TIF050 - Biomaterials, 5p
The course is built upon the principle of understanding the specific properties
and requirements of the different materials used as biomaterials. The course
provides a necessary background in materials science for students who are
entering the Advanced Course in Biomaterials (6p). Content: The course offers
an overview of the major classes of materials such as metals, ceramics and
polymers. Emphasis is placed on structure, mechanical properties, analytical
methods, surface vs. bulk properties and degradation mechanisms of each
material group. Another major theme is the preparation and characterization of
bioactive surfaces for biomaterials applications. Bioceramics, biodegradable
polymers, sterilization methods, industry standards, implant failure and
retrieval analysis are also included. Article Seminars address a current
materials issue within the biomaterials field. Emphasis is placed on the
materials used, processing methods, characterization, and performance. Each
article is discussed during a seminar. For the final project work, each student
selects a specific medical device or application area in biomaterials, and
presents a survey of the materials being used for that application as well as
those under development. The final projects are presented both as a written
report and as a poster presentation during a poster session.
